DERYN WARREN - 10 Questions

10 Questions from the August 2014 1ST CHAPTER Winner.

1. What is your NOVEL about?

My Way (based on the Frank Sinatra song) is about a 35 year old woman whose brilliant husband, a hit author, becomes a quadriplegic. The story begins five years after the accident. She has stuck with him out of loyalty and pity and the loved they shared, but he is bitter and angry and gives little back to her or their son. How she copes and the odd choice she makes to salvage their happiness is the core of the story.

2. Why should people read your novel?

Bad things happen to people and it is how they cope that determines their happiness. Sometimes the choice that might shock the world is the choice that is best for the individual.

3. How long have you been writing screenplays?

I fit my writing around directing films and teaching actors. I wrote an acting book called How to Make Your Audience Fall in Love With You and a novel called Chick Flick about a woman director whose husband leaves her with four young children. The head of casting of HBO called it "the funniest book about heartbreak I have ever read."

4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

The one I like the best for its humor and originality is Pulp Fiction.

5. What artists would you love to work with?

I work with artists all the time. Actors are the bravest artists I know. The actors in the class I teach in LA can prepare a scene in only twenty minutes that can make you laugh or cry along with them.

6. How many stories/screenplays have you written?

I don't write stories. I write novels and I script doctor screenplays.

7. Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?

Just where I am but with a hit novel and an enormous class of brilliant actors.

8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?

Writing is hard and it is so easy to procrastinate. Ideally I write 1500 words a day but I often fall short. I wish I had a better routine. I write on and off almost every day.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I am passionate about children. I have five of my own and my house is always filled with people I "adopt." I am also passionate about politics and fairness and righting the inequities of the world. I have been lucky to travel a lot. We are rich in this country because we have toilets and electricity and access to healthcare. We need to make the world a better place to for all.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Script Contest?

It came into my email and I was hooked.

11. Any advice or tips you'd like to pass on to other writers?

Just do it. Get lots of readers to set you straight. Seek conflict for your characters. Be sparing with ly words and exclamation points. Don't use the word, very. Have a good editor. Read lots and lots.
