FOUR, by Colleen Laeger.

The numbers climb and he asks why I count.
Count
how many it takes to show me
a
part of myself.
I'm
catching up.
It's
not about the boy anymore.
Not
about the whole he carved.
It's
about me. And who I want to become.
I
thought I knew, knew everything there was to acquire for the soul to
survive.
But
I was wrong; naive about the self and where the soul can be pushed before it
breaks.

All
the trepidations of committing, of giving yourself to another, weighs
down.
Once
you sit still long enough to hear the breath, to hear the heartbeat of the
stranger
laying next to you -
It
becomes clear

Love.
Quick love, slow love. The love of being. The love of touch, their hand on
your face, your waist, pulling you closer.
That
rush of being in the moment and not on the sidelines.

So,
I will keep counting.
