that night..., by Rochelle Soetan.
That night, Discontent filled my eyes
with heaping flames
my heart full of hopeless hope
longing with irritation
burning instincts full of realisms
opposing details not yet acknowledged.
My breath kept beating
up against my tears
like ten million heat strokes in one trice
measured breaths and long-winded moans
kept my nostrils awake
so did the presence of yearning.
That night, Yearning swaddled me
draped in absence
amorphous yet visible
he was there - and so was my distress
my remorse held me captive
like a caged bird with broken wings.
Wouldn't let me run away
forbid me to dodge into the light
like a deer on a murky winding road
attachment had grown obligatory and I was bitter
fall was ending with its optimism
winter was approaching with its anticipated despair.
That night, Vengeance arrived on the scene,
said, "You can even the score;"
"Discontent has stolen your precious time and
Yearning played you like a violin!"
"Set your spirits free!" But the one my heart was waiting
for was long in the distance of unattainable.
That night, Everlasting stepped to the other side of my room
I could feel his affection
but inhaled his lack of assurance
he couldn't promise me anything
no abode built of relianceno panoramic glimpse of ecstasy.
No unbending commitment to forever
my weeping uncertainties bled out
everything that needed filtering
I sure cried me a river that night
an ocean of emotions that
joined me in a song.
I cried for me, I cried for him too
I cried until my shattered heart turned rocky blue
The irony - me here, him there
moving forward never felt so defiant and
left me wondering if the bridge between
enthusiasm and devotion would ever meet
That night, after all the reflection and exposure
Acceptance came to cleanse my soul. He was brave and certain.
I seized the fondness of HIM.
