THE LONG AND SHORT OF A NAME, by Vinita Agrawal.
Is that really me in that name?
Two parts, six syllables, thirteen letters
Six vowels, seven consonants.
Those are the warps and wefts of it
An un stitched, drab garb really
that hangs from my lips each time I introduce my self
I could easily lose it
like a mirage in the desert
and just as well roam the world nameless
for all that it's worth.
What is one grain of sand on a beach?
or one beep amongst a million
raiding our Titanium universe?
When emotions soar,
my name is too small to accommodate all the air.
When I am empty,
it clangs harshly in my ears
as if asking who am I.
It has invisible appendages
of family and lineage,
some visible touches
of tender fatherly love and careful selection.
But in the end it's just a name.
I feel distanced from it,
as if I'm on this side of the river
and must cross over a vast aqua expanse
without a boat or oars
to be owned by my name,
to settle into it snugly
like a Joey in its mother's pouch.
Till then I skitter like a pebble on water
not knowing whether I will sink or float.
